The TV film The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler, a Hallmark Hall of Fame production (USA), was premièred at Rīga’s Congress House on October 1, 2009. The filming of the teleplay, initially – and locally – known as Miss Irena’s Children, took place at several locations in Rīga, including Andrejsala, which also hosted the base camp and offices for the casting crew and the multinational technical group involved in the process.
The presentation in Rīga took place five months after the world première in the US via the CBS. So far, as reported, the teleplay has managed to draw a whopping Hallmark record-breaking 10 million viewers in the US. The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler has won the Emmy prize in the Outstanding Makeup for a Miniseries or a Movie (non-prosthetic) category, although it was enlisted in three more nominations. As producer Jeff Most pointed out when addressing those present at the première in Rīga, the makers of the film are currently looking for distribution partners among Latvian TV broadcasting companies.
The film stars Academy Award Winner Anna Paquin as Irena Sendler, a young Polish woman who rescued thousands of Jewish children during the Second World War. In 2007, Irena Sendler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Our account of the filming process in Andrejsala is available in the Archives of andrejsala.lv.
